About This Project

A benchmark project, showcasing most engineering practices. In the Colombian municipality of Sonsón, Department of Antioquia, OHLA, a Spanish EPC contractor, through its Industrial activity line completed the turnkey construction of a cement plant.

The cement plant is located in an exceptional natural environment, perhaps too exceptional to damage, with complex execution conditions: periods of heavy rain, high temperatures and humidity, the Medellνn-Bogotα highway passing through the middle of the plant and surrounded at one end by the Claro River.

The civil works undertaken were primordial for the function of the plant. An 800m culvert buried under artificial mounds and embankments that were needed to increase the existing terrain elevation by 6m channeled the existing stream and was designed dynamically to ensure it can handle the design flow without excessive flooding, while considering factors like inlet and outlet conditions from the river overflow. A rip rap stone wall to channel river flow and protect from erosion was created alongside the river, keeping pace with the river.
